Staff Members And Volunteers Get To Know What It’s Like To Live As A Shelter Animal For One Day

A shelter in Massachusetts thought of a unique way to help humans find out what it feels like to be a shelter animal. For one whole day, a group of volunteers stayed at the facility and did the same activities as the rescue animals.

Cape Ann Animal Aid, a non-profit organization and no-kill shelter, is proud of its Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter at 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester. Donations helped erect the $2 million state-of-the-art building.

According to Don Fryklund, a board member, the shelter is comparable to a five-star hotel. Besides being exceptionally clean and brightly lit, the facility has roomy “condos” instead of cages for their canine and feline guests.

These qualities are partly why the organization’s fundraiser, called Night Without A Family, gained widespread attention. As Development and Communications Director Rebecca Baylies says, the program shows that shelters can be warm, friendly places too.

Cape Ann’s rescue animals have comfortable rooms. They’re also not cooped up 24 hours a day. Instead, the dogs and cats socialize and perform exercises that challenge both body and mind.

Two board members, one employee, and two volunteers participated in last year’s Night Without A Family event. All five of them spent time at the shelter’s animal condos, with two sharing a single room. They had no phones, no books, nothing — only themselves.

Just like the rescue animals, the participants were on display to shelter visitors. A placard outside their room explained why there was a human inside. The sign also asked for donations that eventually went toward Cape Ann’s Enrichment Program.

The five volunteers ate and slept in their condos, then cuddled with the cute cats and dogs. At playtime, the participants went outside with the animals to stretch their legs and run around the enrichment yard. Afterward, they took a stroll in the woods of West Gloucester.

At the end of the event, the participants unanimously stated that it was a great experience. Being fully present in the moment while snuggling with the animals and playing with them was calming.

At the same time, the fundraiser was also eye-opening. The volunteers realized how lonely and, at times, boring it was for the animals to merely sit there, waiting for a family to take them home.

The good news is that the shelter surpassed its goals for this fundraiser. Initially, Cape Ann set the bar at $5,000, but everybody was pleasantly surprised to find that the donations reached $10,000 after the event!

And Night Without A Family is more than just a fundraiser. Feedback from the previous participants has shaped the way Cape Ann employees plan daily routines for their rescue animals.

Furthermore, the event attracts attention to the shelter cats and dogs, which helps them find new homes. Watch a recap of Night Without A Family here:

Trained Dog Lost His Calm When He Got Reunited With His Favorite Teacher

A white labrador retriever is laying in the grass.

Elijah was eight weeks old when he started staying with Ashley Wilt, who was a Canine Companions for Independence puppy raiser volunteer. Wilt helped him with his training to become a great service dog. For almost two years, they lived together, so it wasn’t surprising for the two to get really attached with each other.

Wilt trained Elijah how to become more calm and confident in different situations. She helped the pooch learn various commands. She also helped Elijah behave while staying in a different place such as malls, movie theaters, and restaurants.

Elijah also learned how to stay calm during flights. That’s why Wilt didn’t have issues bringing him on more than 25 flights.

Wilt literally became Elijah’s mom. She fostered and trained the pup with so much patience and compassion. Soon, Elijah became a confident adult pooch.

Wilt and Elijah spent a lot of time together, so it was really heartbreaking when it was finally time to part ways. Elijah needed to go to California to attend more training. After six months, it’s finally Elijah’s graduation.

As a proud foster mom, Wilt decided to book a flight to attend Elijah’s graduation. When the pooch saw Wilt, he couldn’t contain his happiness.

The pooch was trained to stay calm at all times, but when he saw Wilt, he showed a totally different reaction. It was understandable because Elijah really missed her favorite teacher. They didn’t see each other for six months, so it was overwhelming to get reunited finally.

Elijah is now living with his new parent, Lance Weir. Despite that, he still reserves a special space in his heart for Wilt, his favorite teacher.

Wilt narrated that Elijah is now spending his time going to different adventures with his new dad, Weir. She also said that she’s delighted to see that her former student is now living a great life with his new family.

Thank you to Ashley Wilt for this heartwarming video.

Incredibly Calm Service Pup Freaks Out Seeing His Teacher One More Time

A yellow labrador retriever wearing a blue and yellow bow tie.

Every one of us has a favorite teacher. No matter how long it’s been, we feel thrilled meeting them again. And it’s exactly the same when it comes to animals.

Like any other service animals, Elijah started his training early on. He was no more than 8 weeks old when he moved to Colorado to begin his journey in becoming a service dog.

Ashley Wilt, one of the volunteer puppy raisers for CCI (Canine Companions for Independence), took Elijah under her care. For almost 2 years, the pup tagged along everywhere his teacher went. And in the process, Elijah learned how to be calm and confident in every situation.

Because of Ashley’s hard work, Elijah went through adulthood with compassion and patience. In no time, Elijah was finally in the last phase of his training.

It is fulfilling to know that Ashley helped Elijah a lot. But it’s also heart-breaking because the time has come for them to say goodbye.

Elijah flew to California for the final phase of his training. And 6 months later, his graduation day finally came. Ashley was incredibly proud of Elijah. The puppy she raised is now ready to help change lives. However, one thing’s missing.

Ashley realized that there’s no better graduation gift than to be with her student on his graduation day. So, she immediately booked a flight to congratulate Elijah personally.

From the very moment Ashley walked into the pup’s graduation ceremony, Elijah was overjoyed. He barely contained his excitement. He jumped up to Ashley and started licking her face.

Being the good student he was, Elijah is an incredibly calm dog, says Ashley. But he clearly lost it after seeing his teacher again. He freaked out as he was reunited with her.

Elijah’s search for a forever home has since ended. He is now with his new dad, Lance Weir who is a reservist veteran of the Marine Corps. Ashley couldn’t be any happier that Elijah is now helping his dad live a better life.

This Mother Dog Makes Sure Her Daughter Always Has Something To Eat

Two white dogs kissing each other in front of a fence.

A mother’s love is pure and selfless. They say a mother will do anything for her child even if it means making sacrifices for herself. This statement is also true even for man’s best friend. Many have documented motherly acts from dogs. The following story is another documentation of a dog showing pure motherly care.

We’re going to follow the life of a dog from South Korea named Chorong. She has one daughter named Eu-bbun. The two of them don’t live together because they have different owners. However, that doesn’t stop Chorong from caring for her pup.

Fortunately, the homes of the two owners are located in the same neighborhood. So all Chorong has to do is walk a few blocks.

So what does Chorong do? It’s simple yet endearing. Any time she receives food either from her owner or a passerby, she doesn’t eat. Instead, she takes the food and brings it to where Eu-bbun is.

It doesn’t matter if its ribs, meat, or even bread, she is going to bring it to her daughter and feed her. That’s a solid example of motherly love.

Eu-bbun’s owner sometimes has to escort Chorong out of the residence. Otherwise, she is going to stay there indefinitely. Meanwhile, Chorong’s owner always ends up calling her to get back.

Both owners are worried about Chorong’s health. It has come to the point where she wouldn’t eat. All the food she receives goes to her daughter. Because of the concern, they sought the help of a veterinarian.

The solution to the problem was simple. Chorong needs to see her daughter eat first. The vet advised the owners to feed them together. As expected once Chorong realizes Eu-bbun is eating properly, she begins to eat her meal.

Eu-bbun has grown significantly in a few months. She has become the same size as her mother. The two dogs continue to play and dine together. This is a mother and daughter duo that won’t be separated.

Labrador Puppy With A Broken Jaw Brought To Animal Center For Euthanasia Instead Gets A Second Chance With A Loving Family

A person is petting a dog.

The staff of San Jose Animal Care Center met a Labrador named Banana for the first time when his breeder brought him there to be put down. The puppy, who was only six or seven weeks old then, suffered a broken jaw after his sire bit down too hard while correcting his behavior.

Of course, the medical staff refused to euthanize Banana, who still wagged his tail despite his situation. They placed the Labrador on meds to dull the pain, but the center wasn’t equipped to operate on his jaw.

Hence, Dr. Sharon Ostermann, one of the center’s full-time vets who runs the blog Tails of a Shelter Vet, asked for help through Facebook. In just one hour, a California-based non-profit organization called Umbrella of Hope offered to take in Banana.

The puppy required multiple surgeries to repair his jaw. However, his journey to recovery went without a hitch, thanks to the loving care of his medical foster family.

For quite some time, Banana had to wear tape around his snout to stabilize his jaw, and he wasn’t allowed to chew. Once the wires were out of his jaw, however, the silly pup wanted to make up for lost time by nibbling on everything, even his canine sister’s ear!

In all, Banana spent almost a year healing from his broken jaw. Today, he’s no longer a small ball of fur — he’s now a 60-pound Lab named Nanner. Together with his adoptive family, he works as a farm dog, which is well-suited to his high energy levels.

Giving up the Lab was probably the best thing that Nanner’s former owner did for him. In his new home, he runs all he wants around a pasture, then cools down afterward by swimming. The lovable pooch even goes hiking and camping with his family.

Watch Nanner, or Banana, on the day he arrived at San Jose Animal Care Center in the video below:

Puppy Lives Miraculously And Grows Up To Be A Big Pit Bull

A brown and white dog is sitting in the grass.

If there’s one thing that inspiring animal stories teach us the most, it’s not giving up too early. There are countless puppy survivors out there who had managed to bounce back because their owner refused to give up. Here is one of those stories. Let’s meet Guinness the pit bull.

A dog was surrendered to an animal shelter three days before giving birth. That’s when little Guinness came to the world. Jess Vorberg, his current owner, noticed that there was something different about him. Guinness was half the size of the other puppies. Jess recalls taking pictures of Guinness where he looks like a tiny alien baby.

They also noticed that Guinness’ health was declining. He had difficulty breathing and was making odd movements with his mouth. Jess feared that the puppy wouldn’t live for long.

It came to a point where the puppy stopped breathing. Jess had to perform CPR. It worked, and Guinness was fighting for life.

Jess informed her boss about what happened and asked if she could take care of Guinness and fight with him. Jess made sure to prepare and get the little puppy everything he needed.

When Guinness first drank milk, it was magical. He drank like there’s no tomorrow. Jess expresses how happy she is about the decision she made. She ended up adopting Guinness’ sister as well. Jess noticed the two puppies had the same struggle although the sister is twice the size of Guinness.

They noticed how Guinness struggles to walk. At first, he relied on his front legs dragging his back legs. From time to time, Jess trained Guinness’ back legs by positioning him upright with care.

As Guinness grew up, it became clearer and more apparent to Emily how she wouldn’t let go of her dog. She found what she likes to call her “soul dog.” After several months Guinness has become a wonderful and energetic pit bull.

Lost Dog Finally Goes Home After Two Months Of Living A Street Life

A family with a white dog sitting on a chair.

In April of this year, a family living in Turkey had their hearts shattered after their sweet pooch named Leo had gone missing. They searched in all directions, but their efforts were all put in vain. Then, everything surprisingly changed.

About two weeks ago, Sertac Arac, Leo’s human brother, went to visit another town for work. While it’s not that far, it takes approximately an hour drive from their home. Sertac was out with his work colleagues when he spotted something that strangely looked familiar not too far away. Out on the street was a white dog that looked exceptionally similar to their missing pet.

The “stray pup” was resting outside a particular café store when Sertac saw it. It looked unkempt and is clearly stressed with street life. Though completely hesitant, Sertac took out his phone and snapped a photo of the seemingly homeless dog and sent it to his mom and dad.

“I took a picture and sent it to my mother and father,” said Sertac. Still, he admitted that it was very unlikely that the dog was their Leo. It just seemed too impossible for the dog to have made it that far. “I was completely in doubt,” he added.

On the littlest chance that the untidy dog was really the family’s missing pet, Sertac’s parents made the decision to drive and check the spot where Leo was found. They ought to see for themselves if the homeless dog was, in fact, their missing pet. And what occurred next erased all the doubts the family had.

Watch that wonderful moment when the sweet pup finally gets reunited with his family here:

In an instant, Leo recognized his loving family. After 2 months of being away from home living a difficult life on the streets, Leo was obviously overjoyed that he’s finally been found. And similarly, his family couldn’t be any happier for finding him. The lost pup is now heading home.

Leo’s story had a happy ending. And he truly deserves to be. But more than that, it gave his family hope.

About the same time Leo had gone missing, two more dogs of Sertac’s family also mysteriously disappeared. Suspecting it was the work of the dognappers in their town, they lost hope that their furry family members will still be found. But now that Leo’s home, the family’s faith returned that one of these days, their 2 other pups will be back home.
